The New Black West
The New Black West by Gabriela Hasbun is a photography collection celebrating the modern Black cowboys of the Bill Pickett Invitational Rodeo and the community that gathers to watch them ride. Hasbun spent more than a decade photographing this annual event in the Oakland hills, and her full-color images capture the daring rides, the spectacular outfits, and the joy shared between performers and the crowd. Quotes and stories from the cowboys themselves run throughout, alongside a foreword from the Oakland rodeo's regional manager, Jeff Douvel. A coffee-table book for anyone drawn to rodeo culture, photography, and stories of the American West that too rarely get told.
