About Mabel Royds

Mabel Royds (1874–1941) was a trailblazing English artist and a master of the color woodcut. Her career spanned continents, from studying at the Slade School of Art in London to teaching in Canada and eventually settling in Edinburgh. It was there that she perfected her unique approach to printmaking, influenced by Japanese ukiyo-e techniques but executed with her own painterly flair.

Royds was famous for using a brush rather than a roller to apply pigment to her blocks, ensuring each print had a soulful, "one-of-a-kind" quality. While her early work captured her travels through India and Tibet, her later years were dedicated to a "glorious" series of botanical studies.
