BLK MKT Vintage: Reclaiming Objects and Curiosities That Tell Black Stories
Discover a one-of-a-kind treasure trove of Black cultural ephemera in this debut book from Jannah Handy and Kiyanna Stewart, founders of the Brooklyn-based antique shop BLK MKT Vintage. Expanding on their core mission to curate vintage pieces that tell rich Black stories, this volume celebrates the profound contributions Black people have made to American history and consciousness.
After spending years searching through piles, bookshelves, and hidden archives, Handy and Stewart have assembled a stunning visual record. Brimming with over 300 photographs, the book evokes the intimacy of a prized family scrapbook. Readers are invited on a journey through historic celluloid pins from Shirley Chisholm's 1972 presidential campaign, early 1800s hand-drawn maps of the African continent, and 1920s bound yearbooks from HBCUs.
Beyond the visuals, this hardcover explores the foundational concepts of Black archivism and memory work. It includes a foreword by Spike Lee, insightful interviews with Black artists and collectors, a peek into the authors' private collection, and practical tips on how to curate physical spaces that honor your own personal identity.
