About Studio Roof

Romy Boesveldt and Ilya Yashkin started Studio Roof in Amsterdam in 2005, when their three children were small. Romy studied Russian literature. Ilya is an architect. They had grown up making things from whatever was around, and they built a large cardboard playhouse with the children and painted it together. That house became the first product.

The work is still paper. Recycled cardboard is printed with vegetable inks and cut so the pieces slot together. Insects, birds, sea animals, and flowers come flat and turn into sculptures. The family splits time between Amsterdam and the French countryside. Since 2023 there is a shop in the center of Amsterdam. The children, grown now, still work on the brand.
