Grandma Moses: American Modern
Anna Mary Robertson Moses didn't begin painting in earnest until her late seventies. When advancing arthritis made embroidery too painful, she traded her needle for a paintbrush, and went on to create over 1,500 works that captured the vibrant rhythms of rural American life with a freshness and vitality that defied every expectation.
Grandma Moses: American Modern is a long-overdue reexamination of her place in the canon of mid-century American art. Through rich illustrations and fresh scholarly research, this monograph contextualizes her painted world alongside contemporaries like Horace Pippin and Elie Nadelman, dismantling the myth of the self-taught amateur and restoring her rightful standing as a genuine modernist voice. A beautiful addition to any art library or coffee table.
Type: Hardback
Authors: Thomas Denenberg, Jamie Franklin, Diana Korzenik, Alexander Nemerov
