About Erin Flett

Upstairs in an 1850 building on Main Street in Gorham, Maine, Erin Flett prints cloth one color at a time. She draws the pattern, burns the screen, and mixes the ink by hand. The inks are water-based, so the screens rinse clean. Her husband, Maslen, pulls the squeegee. A four-color print means the cloth goes through four times, then hangs to dry. They started in their basement when their kids were small.

Downstairs is the shop. Much of the cloth is a nubby cotton barkcloth, the kind her mother collected when Erin was growing up in Colorado and they spent weekends looking for antiques. Local stitchers sew the pieces. One print run never matches the next exactly. That shift in color is part of the making.
